Digicams : Cameras without film rolls!
Digicams eliminates the chores of film loading, processing, developing and such related activities. Photos that we take can be stored in the memory of the digicam or in secondary storage devices like floppies, CDs etc. Lets see how it is made possible:
The light reflected off the subject passes through the camera lens and is focused on an image sensor. The two commonly used image sensors are CCD (Charge Coupled Devise) array and CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semi Conductor). CCD array is a grid of light sensitive diodes. They measure the intensity of primary colours (Red, Green and Blue) and gives out the corresponding voltages. CCD arrays offer more quality when compared to CMOS, but the latter is less expensive. These voltage signals are then digitized, compressed, changed into a file format and send to the memory or disk by Digital Signal Processor (DSP).
